About National Theatre
Three theatres in one complex is a novel idea. The three parts of the National Theatre are Lyttelton, Olivier and Dorfman. This three-piece theatre was officially dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II in 1976. At that time only two of the three theatres were ready to be used. The Cottlesloe opened the next year. The delay in opening was rather extensive since the Queen had laid the foundation stone as early as 1951.
One can visit the National Theatre site and do a bit of exploring. It is even possible to get a backstage tour of the three-in-one theatre site. A bookstore allows visitors to get mementos, books about theatres and even some scripts.
As to seating, the Lyttelton offers 890 seats with no pillars to block the view of the stage. Cottlesloe has 400 seats. Olivier seating is for as many as 1160. With this many seats available, National Theatre will most likely be the place to go.
