About Theatre Royal Haymarket

Often called the Little Theatre in the Haymarket, this theatre with seating for 905 was built in 1720. There has been considerable activity here, both on stage and off. Political party satires as well as pressure from the Royal Family caused the Lord Chamberlain to censor all plays here. There was once a stampede of patrons in which several people were crushed to death. When the theatre announced the production of The Tailors in 1805, many who had that occupation protested as the plan would not show their occupation in a good light.

This theatre had the first picture-frame stage in London. It also received public displeasure when the orchestra pit was replaced by stalls seating.

Despite some bad publicity it has received, Haymarket Theatre Royal has a good reputation for producing good serious plays. Some of the best British actors and actresses have appeared here. Lily Langtry had her debut performance in this theatre.
