About Shakespeare Globe Theatre

This refers to one of three London theatres which have been associated with William Shakespeare and his works. The earliest Globe Theatre lasted from 1599 to 1613 when destroyed by a fire.

The next Globe Theatre was built a year later and remained until 1642 at which time it closed, mostly because of efforts of Puritans.

The third Globe Theatre was rebuilt only a few metres from the original Globe site in 1997 and carries one of two names, The New Globe Theatre and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

The modern Globe is open, not having a roof. Only the stage and a few other smaller areas have any covering. Audiences must stand for the productions as sitting is not allowed except for those paying more expensive prices. Only1300 people per performance are allowed.

Some modern laws and regulations have caused some changes in the modern Globe from the original which it tried to replicate. Sprinklers are now mounted on portions of the roof.

The plays are presented only in summer months since the theatre is basically outdoors.
