About Duke of York's Theatre

The original name for this theatre was Trafalgar Square because of its proximity to the famous location. Later, the name was changed to The Trafalgar Theatre and then even later to the present name because the future King George V wanted the name changed. It opened in 1892.

There is said to be a ghost of the wife of the first owner of the building. She has not been seen often but is said to have slammed a door around 10 o'clock each evening. The door has since been removed.

Since the first opening, the balcony seats have been removed so the seating capacity has gone down from 900 to 640. Some of the seats have a restricted view of the stage.

Some of the successful runs include Stepping Out, Shirley Valentine, Rat in the Skull, and The Changing Room.
