About Comedy Theatre

For a while, this theatre had the name of the New Watergate Club. This was during the time that the theatre was challenging censorship laws. The Club charged a small subscription fee and allowed patrons to view plays which it had previously been unlicensed to show. After the censorship laws were changed, the theatre returned to its original name of The Comedy Theatre.

Controversial shows and horror type musical shows prevailed from that time forward. Such musicals as Little Shop of Horrors and the Rocky Horror Show have been performed here since.

This theatre originally opened in 1881 with the name of Royal Comedy Theatre, but the word 'Royal' was dropped from the name three years later.

This Victorian style theatre has some problems with supporting columns which restrict the view of the stage area from some seats. Although there are 796 seats available, be careful to choose one with an unrestricted view.
