West Gate Towers
Canterbury Westgate Towers, the largest remaining medieval gatehouse in England and the most iconic building in Canterbury after Canterbury Cathedral.
The Westgate Towers have stood guard over the road from London to Canterbury for over 600 years. Thousands of medieval pilgrims including those immortalised in Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales have passed through the Towers on their journey to visit the shrine of Thomas Becket.
Today, visitors to the Towers come to enjoy the fascinating Museum located in the guard chamber and to enjoy the magnificent and best view of Canterbury from the battlements.
The former Victorian City Gaol has now been reconnected to the Towers for the first time in 160 years and visitors can now experience the original features of imprisonment as represented by the Towers and the enlightened reformns of the Victorian prison movement.
The City Gaol Cafe serves morning coffee, afternoon tea and lunches with daily specials all home cooked using fresh local ingredients.
