Daffodils

One of the most obvious first signs of Spring is the emergence of daffodils in our gardens. All daffodils are members of the Narcissi family. There are over 25,000 registered varieties of the Narcissi and they are mainly cultivated in Great Britain, Holland and The Channel Islands.

The Narcissi family of flowers is named after a man in Greek Mythology who saw his reflection in a stream and fell in love with it. The Gods turned the transfixed man into a beautiful flower.

Daffodils are available in the shops from October to April, although the most prolific time of year is March / April when they grow abundantly in Great Britain. They contain sap that is potentially toxic to other flowers so if using them as part of a mixed bunch do not re-cut them. If you cut do them, allow them to stand in a vase of water for 12 hours before mixing with other flowers.
