Carshalton Lavender
Carshalton Lavender is a not-for-profit community project that manages 3 acres of lavender in Carshalton Beeches, Surrey. This area was once famous as "the lavender capital of the world" and in 1996 the Local Lavender Scheme was established by local environmental charity Bioregional to plant 3 acres of disused council land with Lavandula Intermedia. Cuttings were collected from the gardens of local residents, and are believed to be lavender from the original fields in the area.
In 2007 Carshalton Lavender was named Conservation Project of the Year in the Observer Ethical Awards. In 2009, thanks to a generous grant from the Thames Community Foundation, they were able to purchase their own still for the distillation of the field.
A group of volunteers works to keep the heritage of local lavender alive for current and future generations. Every year the field is open to the public at Carshalton Lavender's Annual Harvest weekend in July.
