Auckland Castle

Auckland Castle,Bishop Auckland Information
Auckland Castle Trust is transforming this 900 year old Bishop's Palace from an unknown private dwelling into a vibrant and fascinating visitor experience. Auckland Castle stands apart as the medieval home and hunting lodge of the Prince Bishops of Durham who for centuries were equal in power to the Kings of England. Within this stunning Gothic palace today- you will uncover the stories of men of great power, wealth, faith and passion, who resided here against a backdrop of nearly one thousand years of British history that played out within its walls and the surrounding parkland.

St Peter's Chapel
Wonder at the spectacular ceiling, ornate woodwork and story-telling of the stained glass windows of Europe's largest private chapel. Built originally as a Great Hall for Bishop Hugh du Puiset, it is the earliest stone built part of the castle to survive dating back to the early 13th century.

Spanish Masters
Marvel at the 13 exquisite paintings of Jacob and his 12 sons that have hung in a purpose built gallery within the palace for over 250 years. These monumental and arresting masterpieces by the Spanish Master Francisco de Zurburan are amongst the most significant treasures of religious art in Europe, and have their own very special story to tell.

Auckland Park
Explore the beautiful Medieval and Georgian parkland surrounding the Palace, home to a charming Gothic revival Deer House built in 1760 to provide the Bishop's deer with food and shelter and act as a grand folly for entertaining guests.
