Set high on the clifftop, the abbey overlooks the harbour and town of Whitby. It was founded by St Hilda in 680 and then destroyed by the Vikings in 867. Rebuilding commenced in the 1220s, but since dissolution in 1538 it only attracted 18th century painters.
