- Carew Castle and Tidal Mill
Carew Castle and Tidal Mill
Carew is one of the few castles to display the development from Norman fortification to Elizabethan country house. Archaeological excavation has revealed a much earlier settlement dating back perhaps some 2,000 years. A mile long round walk, with delightful views, takes in the castle, the Celtic cross, the mill, the causeway, the 23 acre millpond and a medieval bridge. Also part of the historic site is the only restored tidal mill in Wales, with all its original machinery. An introductory slide-tape programme is complemented by automatic 'talking points' explaining the milling process and a special exhibition on milling through the ages. A wide range of events are held every year at Carew, including theatre interpretation, holiday activities, battle re-enactments, country fairs and concerts. A special schools programme enables children to dress in period costume and experience life in the castle in times past.
