About Royal Opera House

In 1732, this theatre opened and was one of only two which were permitted to present “legitimate” theatre. The site was at Covent Garden. Many years later, a 13 year old child made history, even influencing the Parliament of that day to close their proceedings, when he portrayed Hamlet. Shortly thereafter, that theatre burned down and was replaced by another building a year later. Around 40 years later this second theatre also burned down. The present Royal Opera House was built in 1858.

During the First World War, the theatre was used for storing furniture. At the time of World War II, it was used as a dance hall. Nowadays, it is used for opera and ballet presentations.

2156 patrons can be seated at the Royal Opera House.
