Lying between the moors and the sea, the town of Newton Abbot has a varied and remarkable history. Born at the turn of the nineteenth century, out of the amalgamation of two towns on either side of the River Lemon, it thrived for many years on its links with Newfoundland and the cod fisheries. Local industries were often, in fact, paid with fish! In 1846, Brunel's South Devon Railway arrived in the town, Newton Abbot having been chosen in prefence to Ashburton. It became a major rail centre, and one of the area's main employers. The photographs in this fascinating selection bring that vigourous past to life. As well as the town itself, the surrounding villages between Kingsteignton and Kingskerwell, Abbotskerwell and Stokeinteignhead are featured.
