Film news for the week ending 4th March 2016

Here is our summary of the film news for the week ending 4th March 2016.

The big news of the week was, of course, the Oscars.

After all the controversy about diversity, host Chris Rock addressed the #OscarsSoWhite with a comedy routine in his opening monologue.

There were few shocks in the results and Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar for The Revenant and Brie Larson took Best Actress for her performance in Room. The Revenant also won Best Director and Best Cinematography but lost out to Spotlight for Best Picture. The other main winner was Mad Max: Fury Road which won six Oscars in the technical categories.

Of course the Oscars weren't the only awards night this week. The annual Razzie Awards "honoured" the worst cinematic efforts in 2015. 'Fifty Shades of Grey' had the highest Razzie Awards, winning five awards, including a tie in first place for worst film with 'Fantastic Four'.

Great news for Baywatch fans. Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, who plays the lead in the film based on the popular TV show, has confirmed David Hasselhoff will be involved in the film.

Irwin Winkler, the producer behind the "Rocky" films, has confirmed that a Sequel to 'Creed' is in the Works. The film will focus on the life of Adonis Creed. There is no news on whether Michael B. Jordan or Sylvster Stallone will return.

Director Bennett Miller and screenwriter Tom Stoppard are collaborating on an adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, set in the 19th century as originally told by Dickens.

Sony Pictures Animation has announced that the surfing penguins are going to be back in a sequel to "Surf's Up". The film will tell the story of the penguin Cody Maverick and a big wave riding crew travelling to a mysterious surf spot known as The Trenches, to find the biggest waves in the world.

Author Stephen King has confirmed that Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba are on board for the film adaptation of his fantasy series The Dark Tower. Expect The Dark Tower in cinemas around January 2017.

Luca Guadagnino is to remake Dario Argento's 1977 classic 'Suspiria' staring Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton.

George Kennedy, Oscar Winner for 'Cool Hand Luke' died at 91 of natural causes in Boise, Idaho. He played many parts during his long career but will be best remembered for The Naked Gun and the Airport series of films.

Gil Hill, who portrayed Eddie Murphy's no-nonsense boss in the three Beverly Hills Cop films, has died at the age of 84.

Father Ted's Frank Kelly has died, aged 77. He worked on a number of Television programmes in his career but is best remembered for playing the cantankerous old priest with a love of alcohol.
