Archived article - no longer updated Maid in Manhattan She tries on an expensive Dolce & Gabanna couture dress, owned by Caroline(Natasha Richardson). She takes a walk in the park with her son, who brings along his new friend republican senate hopeful Chris Marshall (Ralph Fiennes). Unfortunately he assumes she is an upper class socialite and falls for her charms pursuing her, whilst she tries to get away and keep her indiscretion secret afraid of losing her job. From this point the film becomes romantic comedy of errors with very few surprises. The film follows the normal formula, but fails to impress in so many ways. Although Marshall clearly falls for Marisa, there is no chemistry between the two. Another major drawback for this romantic comedy is that neither of the lead characters is particularly funny. Fiennes’s understated delivery is cold and clinical. There are moments of hope from the, over the top, shrewish socialite Caroline who tries very hard to attract Marshall. Bob Hoskins deserves a mention for his performance as the butler trying to help Marisa. Kevin Wade’s script is heavy and struggles to be funny. Although the film tries to emphasise the class difference it is too trivialised and overdone. It should appeal to Jeniffer’s fans. |
