The Moon

It has undoubtedly been a very busy year for The Moon, who are certainly a hard working, exciting and accomplished band that have tasted some success, maybe 2003 will be the year for them?
Originally known as Carousel Moon the band have earned themselves the reputation as one of the most charismatic and promising young bands to come from South Yorkshire.

First forming in the summer of 1998 (when they were only 16), The Moon gradually made their way through a number of members (including a singer, four bass players, three drummers and two rhythm guitarists) before settling on their current line-up. consisting of founder members Jon Windle (vocals and guitar) and Edward ‘Maz’ Marriot (guitar), with Ben Surtees (bass) and Michael Balkow (drums).

Founders Jon and Maz started the band in rather unusual circumstances: without instruments and unable to play a note, Maz borrowed his dads guitar and Jon started saving for his own guitar, which was the start of something that had passion, but only two members…

Strolling down the road one Friday night they overheard the sound of drumming from a nearby house. Vaguely aware that this was the home of a lad who went to the same school as themselves they knocked on the door and asked him if he wanted to join the band only to find out that he had only bought the drum kit a week previously and was a complete beginner - all in the same boat then!! Finally, after finding a singer they practised whenever and wherever they could.

Despite a constantly changing line-up the group began to play regular local gigs (the advertising of which earned them a warning from the council for littering the town with flyers and posters) and started to build up quite a fan base, with friends and local music fans supporting them at every stage.

Originally performing as a mod act they clad themselves in full 3-piece mod suits, which fitted their image but the suits made it hard to play the guitar.

It was in 2001 that Ben joined, fresh from the life as a tribute performer (for which he still gets stick for from the rest of the band). It became obvious from this point that the band had found it’s ultimate line-up. Dropping the cramped suits and the word “Carousel” from the name The Moon were finally complete.

Now, having just completed the recording of a new three track cd, they have produced a spiky taster in rock music. Their poppy sound has developed into a more mature fusion of frantic chords laced with vibrant unforgettable melodies, tightly played and expertly crafted to get the body moving. The EP was recorded at Doncaster’s Axis Studio where producer Matt Elliss has worked with Louise, Grand Theft Auto and Group Dogdrill, amongst others.
