L'elisir d'amore - Show Information
Nemorino, a simple peasant, is in love with the beautiful and wealthy Adina but she wants to marry a charming Sergeant. Desperate to gain her love, Nemorino buys a magic potion.Donizetti's comic opera is so easy to enjoy. It involves a poor peasant in love with a rich land owner who is engaged to marry another man.
Nemorino is a nave poor peasant, hoping that his love for the wealthy Adina will be returned so they can live happily ever after. She mocks him with an indifferent attitude. She is about to marry Sergeant Belcore.
When a man comes into town selling fake medicines and potions, Nemorino is ready to buy. What he buys is actually only wine, but he expects it to change his fortune concerning Adina. He is told that the potion will take effect the following day. He fully expects that to happen.
Adina decides to marry earlier, the next day in fact. This scares Nemorino into trying to get more potion quickly, some newer potion which will act immediately. He has no more money, however. Sergeant Belcore sees how dejected Nemorino is and suggests that if he joins the army, he can get immediate payment. Nemorino agrees, signs the contract and buys more potion.
The story ends well with Nemorino very satisfied with the elixir's results.
