The Marriage of Figaro - Show Information

The story follows after The Barber of Seville, and tels of a single day in the palace of the Count Almaviva.

One of Mozart's most popular works, the Marriage of Figaro features some of the same characters as The Barber of Seville. This comic opera is based on a play by Beaumarchais.

Figaro, who was the barber in Barber of Seville, is now the valet of Count Almaviva. Almaviva is trying to obtain personal favors of Susanna, who is engaged to be married to Figaro. At the same time, Cherubino is showing too much interest in the Count's wife so Almaviva gives him a place in his army. Susanna, Figaro and the Countess all try to reveal the infidelity of the Count himself.

Although Figaro plans to marry Susanna, Bartolo is trying to force him to marry Marcellina. After a long discussion, Figaro is determined to be the long-lost and illegitimate son of Marcellina and Bartolo. Thus, Figaro cannot be forced to marry his own mother.

There are so many comic situations in this opera including the wearing of each other's clothing, apparent seductions, jealousy, and deceptive means to embarrass the Count. The music and lyrics help to make this a delightful comedy which ends in happiness.
