Carmen - Show Information
The Sensual Spanish gypsy Carmen is driven from man to man by love. Her actions with sergeant Don Jos leads to tragedy.Early in the opera, Jose is ordered to arrest Carmen for having been in a fight. Jose allows her to escape after the arrest so he is arrested for his carelessness. For a month, Carmen can only think of Jose who has been in jail.
Carmen, a gypsy wants Jose to declare his love for her by joining a group of smugglers. He refuses at first but then joins them and flees with Carmen. After a short time, Carmen loses her love for Jose and begins an affair with Escamillo, a bullfighter. There is conflict between Jose and Escamillo over Carmen.
Expect rejection of love, murder, mutiny, and hot-tempered gypsies in this great and exciting opera. Two of the most famous musical pieces in this opera are The Toreador Song and Habanera.
