How to Create a Good Impression When Selling Your Home

" Presentation is the key to helping someone fall in love with a house. Most people make their minds up in that first few minutes."
(Mr Sweeting, partner at Knight Frank)

Because it is first impressions that will make or break the sale of your house it is wise to make sure that all that is possible is done to make sure that the first impression is lasting. First impressions do not always begin as soon as the potential buyer walks through the door, they begin when they arrive at the house outside.

Here are a few tips as to what to do to ensure that you create a good lasting first impression to your buyers and your agent.

Garden Maintenance.

  • Repair and paint any gates or fencing that needs it.
  • Clear the paths.
  • Trim the hedges
  • Weeding
  • Invest in some colourful plants to brighten up the garden
  • Put away any of the children's outdoor toys to make it look less cluttered and more like a garden.

Clean Doors on the House.

  • Re-paint the front and back doors
  • Polish any brass door handles

Paintwork

  • Wash down any paintwork
  • Cover any cracked walls or worn wallpaper with a coat of paint in preferably a light, fresh colour.

Clean Windows

  • Make sure that curtains are freshly washed and that curtains are tied back
  • Air the rooms

Make Rooms Look Spacious

  • Take away any extra furniture and store in a garage
  • Remove general clutter and have a good spring clean
  • Clear children's toys away

Pets

  • Try, if possible, to make sure that your pets are out of the way as they can make a clean house untidy.

Kitchen and Bathroom

  • make sure that these two rooms are immaculate as many buyers will see this as an extra expense and a turn off if they look like they need work doing to them.
