"Cowboy Builders"- How to avoid them.
Nobody likes to be taken for a fool but it is often hard to realise that it is happening. Hopefully some of these points will help you avoid coming across any cowboy builders.
- Go into the project with a plan and obtain planning approval where necessary
- Make a shortlist of contractors that suit your needs so far. It is often best to ask around and gain word of mouth recommendations.
- Obtain references if possible from the builders. Any good builder will be able to provide a reference
- On receiving quotations keep in mind that the cheapest is not always the best.
- Agree on a written contract with the builder outlining the exact details of the job and dates as to when it will be done. This usually only applies to larger jobs however is a good method of security fore any job.
- Make payment agreements. This should also be outlined in the contract. Often staged payments make sure that you stay in control of the project.
