Contents Insurance

Contents insurance covers your household possessions such as furniture, carpets, curtains, fabrics, TV, PC, Hi Fi, electrical equipment and kitchen appliances, as well as ornaments, clothing and other personal possessions.

Contents insurance is available stand alone or as part of a package combined with buildings insurance and is offered by all leading insurance companies. Some leading department stores and even supermarkets are offering competitively priced contents insurance policies.

In today's highly competitive environment and the internet it pays to shop around for the best deals on contents insurance. You can easily surf the net to review contents insurance policies and to establish the best deals but you should be careful to check the benefits, excesses and exclusions to make sure you compare contents insurance policies like for like.

Contents insurance will normally cover your personal items on a New for Old basis should your home be unfortunate to suffer any of the following:

  • Fire, Explosion, Lightening, Earthquake or smoke damage;
  • Theft including damage caused to contents by thieves;
  • Storm or Flood damage;
  • Accidental damage to your TV, Video, DVD player and your Hi Fi;
  • Food in the freezer up to a normal £1000 value;
  • Malicious damage;
  • Damage caused by escaping water or oil from pipes and tanks;
  • Personal Liability;
  • Temporary alternative accommodation should you have to vacate your home.

Contents insurance is certainly more important than ever as more and more people decide to work from home, often using expensive equipment such as pc's, lap tops, printers and multi tasking equipment. Contents insurance can offer a Home Workers Cover. Failure to notify the insurer that you work from home may invalidate a claim for equipment. Some content insurance policies actually offer home workers cover automatically so if you work from home you should look at policies that provide this cover automatically as it may prove to be cheaper.

Whilst the vast majority of contents insurance policies will provide cover against damage caused by major reasons as listed above, it is also possible to extend cover for accidental damage caused by things like knocking over ornaments and spillage of decorating material such as paint whilst doing DIY. This is an option known as Accidental Cover.

Personal Possessions Cover is an option within contents Insurance policies which extends cover to protect your personal possessions, whether they are in your home or away from home. If you select this option your personal possessions will be covered on an 'all risks' basis within your contents insurance policy, which means they will be covered anywhere in the UK or abroad whilst you are on holiday, normally with an annual limit of 60 days. Possessions such as CD players, watches, i-pods, mobile phones, jewellery, clothing and even cash can be covered up to single item limit of £250. You should always check in detail what is covered and what is excluded and the single items limits.

Legal Expenses cover can also be included in contents insurance and sadly is becoming increasingly necessary as disputes with neighbours and even visitors to your home can cause you to be involved in litigation claims for damage.

Contents insurance is vital to protect your expensive possessions and can provide a comprehensive protection for your home.
