Sheffield Sports Teams

Sheffield was the first National City of Sport. Its outstanding facilities hosted international Grand Prix athletics at Don Valley Stadium and world swimming at Ponds Forge; together with Division 1 football, top-class ice-hockey, rugby league and world championship snooker. There is a huge variety of spectator sport.

Sheffield has two football teams: Sheffield Wednesday (The Owls) and Sheffield United (The Blades).

If cheerleaders, loud music, speed and confrontations are your idea of sport heaven, your next destination should be Sheffield Arena to see the Sheffield Steelers ice hockey team. The Steelers were formed in 1991 and now attract regular crowds of 10,000. They were Challenge Cup winners in 1999 and successfully retained the trophy in 2000. Also at the Arena, are the league-winning Sheffield Sharks basketball team. They originally played at Ponds Forge, but their growing fanbase led them to move to the Arena where they attract regular crowds of over 5000.

Sheffield Eagles Rugby League club is based in Sheffield. The club has had a difficult few years after meging with and splitting from Huddersfield Giants. The club left their home ground Don Valley Stadium in late 2009 and now their home games are played at Bramall Lane.

Speedway is also growing in popularity and every Thursday racenight at the Owlerton Stadium, you can catch the Sheffield Tigers. Owlerton stadium also has greyhound racing.
