Jersey's recorded history extends back more than a thousand years and archaeological evidence exists for settlements that date from as early as the Bronze Age. Jersey has always had the ability to be self-sufficient producing their own industries in agriculture, milling, fishing, shipbuilding and woollen goods, many of which could be exported and traded. Tourism was added to the list of industries in the 19
th century due to improved transport links. This way of life was disrupted when Jersey was occupied by Nazi Germany between 1940 and 1945. Jersey is still an exceedingly popular tourist destination with plenty of natural pleasures and amusements to keep the visitors satisfied, and also hosts a number of annual events such as the Battle of the Flowers which is a carnival held on the second Thursday of August. The festival consists of music, fun fairs, dancers, majorettes and a parade of flower floats alongside street entertainers. The carnival began in 1902 to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII. Other festivals and events include Rock in the Park, Jazz in July, Jersey Live and Jersey Eisteddfod, all of which are music festivals. Jersey also stages a Christmas festival, a cider making festival and a Battle of Britain festival.
