Browns Hotel

Browns Hotel,Laugharne Information
Renowned as Dylan Thomas’ favourite watering hole, this high-quality boutique hotel offers an elegant mix of modern comfort, charming touchstones, Welsh excellence and a thoroughly warm welcome. Built in 1752, The Browns' worldwide reputation is founded on the inspirational role it played in the later life of Dylan Thomas. Its 1940s and 1950s heyday was a time when conversation, community, coffee and cake would regularly set the world to rights. To enter Browns Hotel today is to step back into a memorable, simpler, slower time of reassuring certainties. Recently refurbished and lovingly restored, it combines the best of the past with the convenience and comfort of modern facilities - including complimentary Wi-Fi access. All of the 14 en-suite rooms ooze style, quality, joie de vivre and an independence of spirit. Each has been individually designed with the décor and furnishings summoning up nostalgic thoughts of vintage values, style and warm Welsh hospitality. What’s more all rooms come fully equipped with free Wi-Fi access, HD flat-screen TV, IPod docking station, roll-top bath, crisp organic white linen and tea & coffee making facilities. Rooms are available in five distinctive styles - Cosy Single, Cosy Double, Classic, Grand and Suite. It was at this very bar that the poet, writer and notorious drinker Dylan Thomas spent much of his time. Visitors can stand at the bar where Dylan ordered his Buckley's ale and sit in the airy bay window where he read the daily newspapers, sat to “moulder” and write at a wrought iron table, played cards and entertained friends. Thoroughly modern, yet favouring a subtle ‘hands off’ approach to design, the bar is an unpretentious homage to the spirit of a gentler, less complicated era. Offering a selection of light bites and nibbles as well as a tempting range of Welsh ales and Penderyn whisky, it is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing drink and a memorable conversation with friends old and new. The town of Laugharne features plenty of local restaurants and public houses and the Hotel is more than happy to help guests find a suitable place to enjoy a hearty meal. For those seeking a retreat from the frantic pace of everyday life, the snug reading room opposite the bar offers comfortable lounge chairs and a lovingly collated library of Dylan-related books. The Hotel also offers conference facilities for groups of up to 20 people with food and refreshments available. Comfortable, exclusive and within inspirational settings it is perfectly equipped for today’s business needs. Situated in the coastal town of Laugharne, the Hotel is little more than a 5 minute drive from the A40 and just over 50 minutes from the city of Swansea. It also offers free on-site parking. Swansea offers excellent transport links to the rest of the United Kingdom, there is also a train station at Carmarthen, less than a twenty minute taxi ride from the Hotel. The historic township of Laugharne sits in the undulating green country of Carmarthenshire in southwest Wales an invigorating mix of brooding estuaries, winding pathways, plunging cliffs and globally renowned beaches. Steeped in history the town has become a popular tourist destination amongst everyone from artists and writers to anglers, hikers and bird-watchers. It is perhaps most famous as the place where Dylan Thomas “got off the bus, and forgot to get on again” and it was here where he wrote much of his later work. Indeed the fictional town of Llareggub in Under Milk Wood is thought to be based on Laugharne itself. The Boathouse where Dylan lived is now a heritage centre and offers a fascinating insight into the man and his works. Other local attractions include St Michael’s Church where Dylan Thomas is buried and the spectacular remains of Laugharne Castle. Family fun can be had at the nearby Folly Farm Adventure Park & Zoo, there’s also Heatherton World of Activities which offers everything from Paintball, go-carting, archery and a thrilling tree-top adventure trail.
