Traditional Christmas Flowers

Christmas is a time of intimate traditional celebrations in the home so traditional Christmas flowers and plants can enhance the experience. There are also some Christmas holiday traditions and folklore related to flowers and plants that can be followed.

Holly

Holly - The traditional colours of green and red derive from the native Christmas holly plant. Decorating the house with holly was a tradition born long before Christianity. Holly can also be used to symbolize man.

Ivy

Ivy is very symbolic at Christmas time. It symbolizes women and when combined with Holly should create a balance and it's said to bring luck and happiness to relationships. It can also symbolize undying affection, true love, faithfulness, eternity and resurrection.

Mistletoe

A Parasitic plant and another pre-Christmas tradition. Remember to place the Christmas Mistletoe in a high place for kissing under. Tradition has it to remove one berry after each kiss but hey, why waste kisses?

Poinsettia

The Poinsettia - This plant is famous for bursting into flower at Christmas time. Legend has it that a child in Mexico was walking to church but had no greeting to put in the traditional manger. The child was upset but picked some weeds by the roadside as at least they were a gift from the heart. When the child arrived at church to make her offering the weeds transformed into beautiful a plant with star shaped flowers.

The Christmas Rose

The Christmas Rose is a truly English flower. It relates to the story of a Shepherdess who saw the 3 wise men and Shepherds taking their gifts to the baby Jesus. She had no gift to offer until an Angel appeared and brushed aside the snow to reveal a beautiful rose.
