Stadium Valley, The
The Addicks were formed in 1905 by a group of teenagers. The team has also been known as The Valiants and The Robins. A debate has raged over the origins of their nickname, one theory is that 'Addicks' is merely a corruption of 'Athletic'. The most popular argument stems from an underwriter who was also a fishmonger. The team would dine on fish suppers following matches and if they won, would receive Haddock rather than Cod. Therefore, 'Addicts' could be a corruption of 'Haddock'.
Charlton turned professional in 1920 and joined the Football League in 1921 and gained promotion to Division 2 in 1929. They entered the top flight for the first time in 1936.
In the 1985/6 season The Addicks left the Valley Stadium as they were undergoing a financial crisis that threatened the existence of the club. The team was unable to return home until 1992 after sharing grounds with Crystal Palace and West Ham United.
Charlton have never won the League but won the FA cup back in 1936. A comical game occurred in the 2002/3 season against Sunderland. Charlton won 3 - 1 with all 3 goals coming courtesy of Sunderlands players!
