5870619Poetry Launch: Jeremy Over with Luke Kennard, Lucy Burnett & Isabel Galleymore
DateThursday 31st October 2019
DescriptionPlease join us to hear from four incredible poets: Jeremy Over, Luke Kennard, Lucy Burnett Isabel Galleymore!Isabel Gallymore: In her Forward prize shortlisted first book of poems, Significant Other Isabel Galleymore takes a sustained look at the eight million differently constructed hearts of species currently said to inhabit Earth. These are part of the significant other of her title; so too are the intimacies loving, fraught, stalked by loss and extinction that make up a life. Drawing at times from her residency in the Amazon rainforest, Galleymore delves into a world of pink-toed tarantulas, the erotic lives of barnacles, and caged owls that behave like their keepers. The human world revises its own measure in the light of these poems.Luke Kennard: Tricksy, acerbic and laugh-out-loud funny, Cain is the dazzling new collection from Next Generation Poet Luke Kennard. The year is 2016 and Luke Kennard finds himself estranged from his family, his publisher and his faith. With the help of his Community Psychiatric Nurse, who claims to be the living embodiment of Cain--the first murderer--the poet changes his name to Father K and searches for answers--in his childhood, in poetry, in alcohol, and in a notorious, long-running DVD box-set.Jeremy Over: Fur Coats in Tahiti by Jeremy Over is a cocktail of borrowed forms and modes from Dada, Surrealism, Fluxus, the OuLiPo, the Vienna Group, and the New York school. Jeremy Over mixes collage, doodles, erasures, findings, and mistranslations to create unlikely meetings between, amongst others, the Fluxus artist Robert Filliou and G.K. Chesterton, the Zen Buddhist D.T. Suzuki and Tommy Cooper, Steve Reich and Dan Maskell.Lucy Burnett:Lucy Burnett's second collection Tripping Over Clouds explores how we fetch up with the world in all its variety, difficulty and beauty, ranging across encounters with mountains, love, contemporary politics and visual art. Ultimately this is a poetry which asserts hope, and playfulness, as strategies for navigating an inherently changeable sense of now.Tickets for this event are free but please book your place online for this event.
