DateThursday 19th July 2018
DescriptionNatural dyes have been used for thousands of years with the earliest record of dyeing dating back to China in 2600BC. There have been natural-dyed textiles found and preserved in the tomb of Tutankhamen and pre-Incan burial tombs, references to scarlet linen in the Bible and even in the writings of Alexander the Great. Join botanical dye expert Babs Behan for this fascinating talk, discussing where and how natural dyeing processes fit within today's fashion industry and global movements such as Fashion Revolution. Babs believes that a return to these ancient practices is part of the solution to today's polluting textile industry and a way forward for a sustainable future in fashion. Through her debut book Botanical Inks, Plant-to-Print Dyes, Techniques and Projects, Babs explains how to transform foraged wild plants, plants, garden produce and recycled food into dyes and inks. The book demonstrates how to extract environmentally sustainable colour from the landscape and use it to create natural dyes for textiles, clothing, paper and other materials. Botanical Inks covers dyeing and surface application techniques, including bundle dyeing, Shibori tie-dyeing, hapazome, indigo sugar vat dyeing, wood-block printing, screen printing and more. It also promotes an awareness of sustainable practices and how to reduce our impact on the planet. Botanical Inks, Plant-to-Print Dyes, Techniques and Projects, £16.99 published by Quadrille May 2018 will be availbe to purchase in the Museum shop. Babs Behan is a botanical and mineral artist/designer. She has a BA in Surface Design from UAL and is the founder of artisan natural dye studio Botanical Inks, based in Bristol. Babs first learnt about natural dyeing and printing processes in India and further travel bought to light how dyeing using plant materials is still thriving around the world. After six years of learning artisanal techniques, she returned to the UK to develop a local manufacturing system using locally sourced fibre and natural plant dyes, setting up Botanical Inks. Here Babs creates naturally dyed and printed cloth and paper for local designers and workshops using contemporary and traditional techniques. The event starts at 6pm with a glass of wine in the Museum foyer and opportunity to view the current exhibition. The talk follows at 6.15pm for 6.20pm in the Fashion Studio and lasts for approximately one hour including an opportunity to ask questions, followed by a book signing in the foyer.
