Description | October 1st 1975, Moscow Conservatory, the public première of Shostakovich’s Viola sonata ??" seven weeks after the composer’s death. Written in the last two months of his life, the sonata was Shostakovich’s only composition specifically for viola and piano and has become one of the most important works in the canon for that combination of instruments. Carol Hubel-Allen viola and Paul Turner piano will perform the sonata along with the first movement of Beethoven’s Moonlight sonata, referenced in the final movement of Shostakovich’s sonata. Also in the programme is a composition from the Soviet film The Gadfly, composed by Shostakovich, called Romance, which was used as the theme music for the television series Reilly Ace of Spies. |
