Epsom Derby

Epsom Derby festival, the most iconic of all sporting events in the UK, takes place at the magnificent Epsom Downs Racecourse. As per the available records the first race took place in 1661 and has been taking place each year since. Initially the distance for running the race was 1 mile which was later on increased to 1 mile 4 furlongs and 10 yards (2,423 m) which is applicable till date.

The horses which take part are thoroughbreds and have to be three years old, and the type of race is called flat racing due to a level track and a predetermined distance on which the race takes place. The festival takes place in the month of June each year.

Some of the famous sections at Epsom Downs Racecourse are the Queen's Stand, where conferences and business meetings can be accommodated, and the Grand Stand which is currently undergoing an impressive makeover. A new Holiday Inn hotel is also scheduled to open after the Derby Festival.

Ladies Day, which will be held on the 6th June this year, is an event which every race spectator looks forward to. Ladies can dress up to their attractive best, and one lucky lady can go on to win the 'Style on The Downs' competition prize.

Derby Day follows the Ladies Day and is on the 7th June. The popularity of the event means that the viewing areas are quickly sold off although there is always hope for the ardent fan.
