A500 which enters the city from north continues down south to meet M6 in the South West at J15 junction. A52 is also on the north of the city and diverts to the east. A50 links the M1 and M6 motorways from east to west.

The main local bus operator is First Group under the name First PMT. There are also several other companies operating bus services in and around the city like Bakers Bus, D&G Bus Service and Wardle Transport. National Express is the operator for long distance travel.
