Westminster lies about 45 miles to the west via dual carriageway A127. Single carriageway A13 runs to London Docklands via Tilbury. Both the roads cross M25 before going on to London.

First Essex Buses and Arriva Southend are the major bus operators in Southend. Some other bus and coach companies are Stephensons of Essex, Fords Coaches, Regal Busways, NIBS Buses (service to Rayleigh, Shotgate and Warley) and Gatwick Flyer. National Express operates daily coaches to Liverpool.

London Southend Airport is the regional airport 3 miles to the north and an eastern gateway to London.
