A184 and A167 connect Gateshead to Newcastle upon Tyne to the north. South Shields is to the east of the city and is connected via A184 and A1018. A1 connects the city to Chester le Street in the south. Hexham is to the west of the city and is connected via the A69.
The main bus services for travel in and around Gateshead are Go Gateshead, Go Wear and Go Northern which are all operated by the Go-Ahead Group. The other important local operator is Arriva Northumbria.
There are no tram services but there exists a light rail system called Nexus for travel within Gateshead and nearby.
The city is accessible from the Newcastle International Airport in the North and Durham Tees Valley Airport.
The nearest ferry port is Newcastle Ferry Port and DFDS operates ferries to Amsterdam, Bergen, Haugesund and Stavanger.
