Nocturnal
Director Nathalie Biancheri makes her fiction film debut with an intimate drama about a potentially awkward friendship across the age divide. Single mother Jean (Sadie Frost) leaves behind ghosts of the past in Dublin to return to her Yorkshire hometown with 17-year-old daughter Laurie (Lauren Coe) in tow. Alienated from her classmates and mother, Laurie wears snarky humour as armour and gravitates towards the school's physically imposing handyman Pete (Cosmo Jarvis), who is roughly twice her age. The bond between the two lost souls should ring alarm bells but Pete's interest in Laurie is purely as her protector and his selfless actions help the teenager to find new direction in her unsatisfying life.
