Stage Mother
A mother moves to San Francisco to honour her late son's legacy in an uplifting musical comedy drama directed by Thom Fitzgerald. Maybelline Metcalf (Jacki Weaver) is a conservative church choir director in the Texan town of Red Vine, who is estranged from her son Ricky after he comes out as gay. She learns that Ricky has died from a drug overdose and leaves behind her disapproving husband Jeb (Hugh Thompson) to travel to San Francisco to say farewell. Maybelline discovers that she is heir to her son's business, an ailing drag club called Pandora's Box co-run by Ricky's boyfriend Nathan (Adrian Grenier). Rather than sell the business, Maybelline employs her skills as a choir director to revitalise the stage performances, encouraging resident drag queen Cherry Poppins (Mya Taylor), Joan of Arkansas (Allister MacDonald) and Tequila Mockingbird (Oscar Moreno) to sing live rather than lip-sync.
