Waiting for Anya
A young shepherd helps to smuggle Jewish children over the Spanish border during the Second World War in a life-affirming drama adapted from the book by Michael Morpurgo. Jo Lalande (Noah Schnapp) lives in the village of Lescun as the spectre of German occupation looms large over France. With his father away at war, Jo takes on the role of man of the house and he embraces his newfound responsibilities with gusto. During a walk, Jo meets a secretive local man called Benjamin (Frederick Schmidt), whose daughter Anya is missing. The boy learns that Benjamin and his widowed mother-in-law Horcada (Anjelica Huston) are hiding young Jewish refugees in the family's barn on the outskirts of town. Jo risks his life to help with the daring escape plan, painfully aware of the consequences if German soldiers discover his involvement.
