Federico Fellini's 8 1/2
A welcome re-issue of Federico Fellini's 1963 comedy drama shot in lustrous black and white, which won two coveted Academy Awards including the statuette for Best Film In A Foreign Language. Famous Italian filmmaker Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) is supposed to be hard at work on a new science fiction drama but he is suffering from a crippling bout of director's block. Unable to move forward with the project and hampered by problems with his marriage to his wife Luisa (Anouk Aimee), as well as relationship woes with his mistress Carla (Sandra Milo), Guido visits a clairvoyant, who compels the director to contemplate memories of the past. Flashbacks and fantasies about dream actress Claudia (Claudia Cardinale) gatecrash Guido's forlorn reality, as he imagines producers driving him to the brink of death. Each retreat from the real world is another hour wasted and it seems like Guido might never complete his picture.
