Gopi Puthran, screenwriter of the 2014 action thriller Mardaani, graduates to the director's chair for the gritty sequel, which welcomes back Rani Mukerji to the role of dedicated Mumbai police officer Shivani Roy. It has been five years since Shivani took down evil kingpin Karan Rastogi and dismantled his child-trafficking network. Promoted to Superintendent of Police, Shivani arrives at a crime scene where a young woman has been raped, tortured and murdered. The despicable act sends shockwaves through the city and Shivani vows to bring the culprit to justice. She puts herself in the firing line to secure a conviction and the sadistic perpetrator (Vishal Jethwa) goads the police, daring Shivani to make a fatal error of judgement.
