Meeting Gorbachev

Born in 1931 in the village of Privolnoye, Mikhail Gorbachev grew up on a farm run by his father Sergey and Maria, and was accepted to Moscow State University to study law. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Community Party becoming General Secretary in 1985 following the death of Konstantin Chernenko. In the first - and as it turned out only - election of a Soviet president in 1990, Gorbachev was duly elected and he played a pivotal role in the end of the Cold War and the reunification of Germany. Werner Herzog conducts a series of interviews with the former President of the Soviet Union to gain a better understanding of his perspective on 20th-century European politics, intercut with archive footage of Gorbachev's early years. The film is co-directed by Herzog and Andre Singer.
