Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound

In the 1920s, filmmaking took a giant leap forward with the introduction of sound, leading to the release of The Jazz Singer in 1927, the first feature-length picture with a synchronised score and scenes of recorded speech. Today, sound design is an intrinsic part of the cinema experience, fully immersing audiences in the on-screen action. Documentary filmmaker Midge Costin pays tribute to some of these audio pioneers including Ben Burtt (Star Wars), Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now) and Gary Rydstrom (Saving Private Ryan), exploring how their efforts play a vital role in the filmmaking process. The documentary includes contributions from directors Ryan Coogler, Sofia Coppola, George Lucas, David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg and Barbra Streisand.
