The Cave
In 2018, Syrian director Feras Fayyad was Oscar-nominated for his revealing documentary Last Men In Aleppo, which follows volunteer members of the White Helmets as they perform dangerous search-and-rescue missions in the besieged city. The film-maker returns to his war-torn homeland for an inspiring portrait of courage and female solidarity under fire. He focuses on a subterranean hospital known as the Cave where managing physician Dr Amani Ballor and colleagues Samaher and Dr Alaa work tirelessly to treat casualties of the Syrian war against a backdrop of systemic sexism. Working alongside male counterparts in a manner that would be unthinkable above ground, the female doctors overcome chronic supply shortages to tend to badly injured civilians.
