The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg (Les parapluies de Cherbourg)
A welcome re-release of director Jacques Demy's Palme d'Or-winning 1964 classic about a doomed affair between pretty shop girl Genevieve (Catherine Deneuve) and garage mechanic Guy (Nino Castelnuovo) in the town of Cherbourg at the time of the Algerian War. The evening before he is due to leave for the front line, the lovers enjoy a passionate night together which results in Genevieve falling pregnant. While her beloved is away, Genevieve is persuaded by her disapproving mother (Anne Vernon) to turn her back on love and settle for a comfortable life with wealthy Parisian jeweller Roland Cassard (Marc Michel). The fairy-tale unfolds as a candy-coloured musical with Demy's dialogue sung to the swoonsome strains of Michel Legrand's magnificent score.
