The King

Oscar nominee Timothee Chalamet plays a young monarch charting the destiny of war-torn Britain in director David Michod's brutal drama, which was co-written by Joel Edgerton. King Henry IV (Ben Mendelsohn) sits on the English throne, presiding over a divided country which is unable to seize the prize jewel of France across the Channel. When the monarch's final breath draws near, he beckons eldest son Prince Hal (Chalamet) to the court and confirms that the crown will pass to youngest boy Thomas (Dean-Charles Chapman). Soon after, Thomas leads men into battle and Hal overshadows his younger sibling, earning the respect of the troops. Chief Justice William Gascoigne (Sean Harris) implores Hal to defy his father's edict and take the throne to ensure a period of stability. The newly-crowned Henry V pledges to be a benevolent and generous ruler and he takes counsel from Falstaff (Edgerton), who has witnessed countless atrocities on the battlefield. Bitter rivalries within the royal court disrupt Henry's rule and he is drawn into conflict at Agincourt, where he faces the tactical guile of The Dauphin (Robert Pattinson).
