A Nigerian boy grows confused about his racial identity in a poignant British drama, based on the experiences of writer-director Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. In 1960s Tilbury in Essex, a six-week-old baby is placed into temporary foster care and surrogate mother Ingrid (Kate Beckinsale) takes charge of the infant. As the boy grows, Ingrid forges a complex relationship with little Enitan (Zephan Amissah), who struggles to earn the love and respect of his parent. Starved of a mother's affection, teenage Enitan (now played Damson Idris) exhibits self-destructive behaviour that eventually leads him into the clutches of a gang of skinheads, spearheaded by the fearsome Levi (John Dagleish). The gang preys on Enitan's insecurities and the young man seems doomed. Sympathetic teacher Miss Dapo (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) intervenes at a crucial juncture and offers Enitan a final chance at redemption, if the teenager is brave enough to face his deepest fears.
