Sea of Shadows
Richard Ladkani, Sean Bogle and Matthew Podolsky co-direct an eye-opening documentary about a carefully coordinated mission to save a marine environment from destruction. It has been illegal to catch totoaba marine fish since 1975 but the species is a high prized delicacy in China, which can entice poachers to defy the ban. Chinese traffickers join forces with Mexican drug cartels to poach the remaining totoaba in the Sea of Cortez, using crude methods which could destroy all marine life in the region including the elusive and endangered vaquita porpoise. The film follows an undercover mission coordinated by conservationists, scientists, investigative journalists and the Mexican Navy to protect the last remaining vaquitas and halt the destruction.
