Honeyland

Documentarians Ljubo Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska spend three years in an isolated region in the Balkans, observing Macedonian wild beekeeper Hatidze Muratova and her mother Nazife. Hatidze is the last in a long line of caretakers of the surrounding countryside, who farms honey in small batches and walks four hours to the nearest city to sell her produce. When she isn't with the bees, Hatidze dotes on her blind and paralysed mother in a village without electricity or running water, which is unreachable by regular roads. The film observes the conflict when an itinerant family led by patriarch Hussein moves into the village and dismisses Hatidze's rules to sell his own honey. While Hatidze proudly clings onto a fast disappearing way of life, greed and desperation threaten the delicate balance between humankind and nature.
