Ten years have passed since Donna Sharp (Lorrain Toussaint) left her family in Jamaica to travel to America for work to support her husband Garfield (Dennis Titus) and sons Germaine (Kadeem Wilson) and Akeem (Dale Elliott). Her visa expired long ago and now Donna is trapped in a vicious cycle as an illegal immigrant. Track and field star Akeem hopes to reunite with his mother by earning a scholarship to an American university as he continues to impress his running coach (David Allen Grier) over 200 metres. Unfortunately, the self-destructive behaviour of Akeem's old man and scam artist older brother Germaine threaten to shatter his dreams. Support from running mate Kerry (Shantol Jackson) and fellow student Mira (Shak-Quera South) give Akeem hope that he can rewrite his destiny.
