Hitsville: The Making of Motown
Released in the year that Motown Records celebrates its 60th anniversary, Gabe Turner and Ben Turner's lovingly assembled documentary is the first film made with the participation of the label's visionary founder, Berry Gordy. The picture charts the creation and success of Motown against the vibrant backdrop of the growing civil rights movement. Interviews with Gordy and some of the artists of the era focus on the period from the birth of the company in 1958 Detroit to its relocation to early 1970s Los Angeles when the power of music became a balm to racial tensions. The film incorporates behind-the-scenes footage from Gordy's personal archives and Motown's vaults. Screenings on September 30 include exclusive footage from the film's world premiere on August 8 at the Harmony Gold Theatre in Los Angeles.
