The Souvenir

Award-winning London-born filmmaker Joanna Hogg delves into her own youthful experiences for an unconventional love story produced by Martin Scorsese, which casts Tilda Swinton and real-life daughter Honor Swinton Byrne as on-screen kin. Julie (Swinton Byrne) lives in early 1980s Knightsbridge with flatmates, who are not ashamed to take advantage of Julie's well-to-do Norfolk parents. Her mother (Swinton) occasionally pops in with food shopping and wearily lends money to finance her daughter's dreams of becoming a filmmaker. In the throes of creative endeavour - Julie's masterpiece is a documentary about the people of Sunderland - she encounters Foreign Office junior Anthony (Tom Burke), whose self-confidence completely overwhelms Julie. They embark on a tempestuous romance, which seems to be the jolt of electricity that Julie needs to complete her film. Unfortunately, Anthony has not been completely honest about certain aspects of his life and as his lies unravel, Julie faces stark choices about calling "cut" on their relationship.
